2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games

Posted by on Mar 12, 2010

As all of you were aware, the 2010 Winter Olympic Games started on February 12th and went on for several weeks. We were very proud to have the Olympics come to Vancouver as it was a once in a life time opportunity. From the middle of January we were focusing on Olympic Games what they are  all about, especially the spirit of friendship and peace. We also  kept track of all the achievements and cheered for every country to do their best. We had discussed and learned about the mascots and what they represent, as the children took a big interest in them. In fact they did amazing art about them. They have learned that all the mascots are friends as well as a team that play together.

Greeting the torch

We took a walk to New West to greet the Olympic torch. On the way back to the Daycare we stopped in a local Pilipino store to say hello.

Olympic party

We celebrated the opening day of Olympics with a party of our own. We made chocolate pudding and had hotdogs with juice for lunch.

Mascots

We spent many days talking about each mascot; what their names are, what kind of creature they are, where they live, what they like to do, what they eat, how they became friends and why they stick together. We had bought the mascots for our Centre as well as the book. Even now after the Olympic Games are over the mascots are still the most popular toys being busy in every area of our Centre.

Wedding

Sumi and Miga are the favourite mascots of the Daycare. There was a 2 week discussion on whether or not Sumi and Miga should get married. The final decision was yes and we had an Olympic Games wedding.

Bronze

Children already knew silver and gold, but they weren’t sure what the color bronze was. We looked at silver and gold things and then looked at some things that were similar to bronze. By experimenting and mixing the colours, they found how to make a bronze.
